The Challenge
Energy Queensland was formed by merging four separate energy companies, resulting in fragmented technology and disconnected workflows for 6,000+ field workers. Serving an area 2.5x the size of Texas, our crews face high-risk environments daily—from cyclones to high-voltage hazards.
The goal? Move away from legacy paper-based systems and disparate tech to a unified, human-centered Apple ecosystem that keeps 9,500 employees safe, connected, and efficient.
My Role
I lead the UX/UI design for critical internal engineering and field operational tools, working within a multidisciplinary team to translate complex safety regulations into intuitive iOS experiences. I conduct the design research, workshops and also rapidly prototype out concepts to validate hypothesis from research.
Key Products
HazChat: Real-Time Hazard Safety
The Problem: Field crews needed a way to prepare for site conditions and communicate hazards instantly, without the friction of legacy reporting tools.
The Design: A custom iPad/iPhone app built in Swift that allows crews to visualize hazards in real-time. The design on high-contrast, low-cognitive-load UI patterns to ensure usability in bright sunlight and high-stress environments. Utilisation of Apple intelligence for Geofencing hazards and risks.
Impact: Empowered crews to manage hazards in the moment, directly improving physical safety for thousands of workers.
LVCM (Low Voltage Compliance Management): Real-Time Hazard Safety
The Problem: Technicians perform over 60,000 switchboard tests annually. Missing a step isn't just a compliance failure; it’s a safety risk.
The Design: A streamlined compliance workflow that guides technicians through testing protocols. The interface prioritizes clarity and error prevention, allowing workers to spot issues early. Utilisation of Apple Intelligence to map closest core resources, eg depots as users work in remote areas.
Impact: Drastically lowered incident rates and digitized a massive compliance workload.
Notifications Hub
The Problem: In a region prone to natural disasters like cyclones, relying on slow communication channels for critical updates can put crews at risk.
The Design: A custom-built app dedicated to pushing alerts with crucial updates to teams "right when they're needed". We designed a notification system that cuts through the noise, prioritizing urgent operational data over general comms.
Impact: Ensured field workers receive time-sensitive safety and operational updates instantly, regardless of their location.
I also support assorted other projects and initiatives such as Apple Car Play for locating difficult to locate assets, and Spatial Computing projects via the Apple Vision Pro for remote assist and design engineering
The Outcome
Our move to a user-centric Apple platform transformed the workforce. The success of these tools led to Energy Queensland being featured being recognized by Apple’s Government Success Story.
15,500+ Apple devices deployed.
60k+ annual safety tests digitized.
"Enormous efficiencies" cited by the COO.
"Apple devices are creating enormous efficiencies while keeping our people safe." — Paul Jordon, COO Energy Queensland
